Wal-Mart Expands Prescription Program for Generics

By: FDA News

Wal-Mart says it will sell discounted 90-day supplies of up to 350 generic products as the third phase of its $4 prescription program. The discounted drugs will be available at Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam’s Club pharmacies for $10.

The retailer also will sell a 30-day supply of alendronate, a generic version of Merck’s osteoporosis drug Fosamax (alendronate sodium), for $9 as an expansion of its September 2007 initiative to include more prescription drugs for women.

In addition, medications to treat breast cancer, menopause and hormone deficiency were added to the list of $9 women’s medications. Combined, Wal-Mart estimates the expansion will save women more than $100 million annually.

The retailer also introduced a new program offering customers more than 1,000 OTC items for $4 or less.
